GREENS PICKET COWLEY ROAD TESCO
On the evening of Thursday August 4th at 6 pm, Green Party members and
councillors joined local activists in picketing the Tesco supermarket
on Cowley Road. It was a transnational protest against the treatment of temporary labourers by the corporation, who are facing a
wildcat strike at their Distribution Centre in Dublin after the sacking of
two Polish members of their workforce.
The temporary employees at the Greenhills Road Distribution centre have been
protesting against the continuous raising of work levels without pay, the
lack of union representation, and their lack of rights compared to ordinary
workers (despite the fact that many 'temporary workers' have worked at the
centre for months). Since the sacking of two Polish workers (whose identities
are currently not being revealed for fear of further victimisation) the calls
for a protest have been taken up across the country and elsewhere in Europe.
Cllr Matt Sellwood, Deputy Leader of the Green Group on Oxford City Council, joined the demonstrators, and commented: "Tesco already have
a poor reputation for corporate social responsibility. This
is simply the latest case of victimisation from a company that made over
£2 billion in profit last year, and yet cannot be bothered to behave like a decent corporate citizen. They should treat their workforce with the respect
that they deserve."
