Greens hoping to build on 2005 City budget success |

13th February
Oxford's Green Councillors, who hold the balance of power on the City Council, are hoping to top last year's budget success - when they secured over £1m of funding for Green initiatives (over three years). [See amusing coverage from Oxford Mail Feb 2005 below]. This included the core funding for the new recycling scheme, due to be introduced later this year, which will bring a garden waste, cardboard and plastics recycling service to the entire City and is expected to increase recycling rates from a paltry 15% to a respectable 40% plus.
At a meeting of Full Council on Monday, the Greens will be presenting a balanced three year budget which includes over £2m of Green bids over and above those Green ideas which have been incorporated into the Council's spending plans from last year. These will include innovative energy efficiency schemes, support for those in housing need, more help for recycling and studies to investigate improving transport in the City. The full proposals will be made public on Monday and posted on this website.
The Greens are also backing several bids developed in collaboration with the controlling Labour Group including the appointment of new litter enforcement officers, affordable housing development support and an OX1 business improvement district. Says Green Group leader Craig Simmons, who will be proposing the City budget alongside Deputy Matt Sellwood, "We have identified opportunites for savings which will free up funds for spending on new initiatives. Our budget proposals, if adopted, will make the Council leaner, the City greener and our streets cleaner."
