29th April 2006
Oxford's Green Councillors have again spoken out against the closure of Magdalen Bridge on May morning.
The Greens, who represent the City Council Wards on both sides of the Bridge, have consistently asked for alternatives to bridge closure to beinvestigated to avoid cutting off East Oxford residents from the festivities. Once again, City Centre & East Oxford Councillors were not consulted on the plans for May morning.
Says Green Councillor Craig Simmons who represents St. Mary's Ward on the eastern side of the bridge, "Blocking access to Magdalen College and the City Centre over Magdalen Bridge means a long, long walk home for East Oxford residents who have to cross the river either through University Parks or over Donnington Bridge. The Greens have suggested various alternatives - such as temporary access across Angel & Greyhound Meadow - which would provide a safe, manageable and pleasant route home for East Oxford residents wishing to join in the festivities."
Both Liberal Democrat and Labour Councillors have been happy to adopt recommendations made by the police. Only the Greens have spoken out against closure whilst suggesting alternatives.
