Labour on waste incineration Print E-mail

Letter to Editor, Oxford Mail from Cllr Craig Simmons

6th May 2006

Dear Sir,

So, New Labour MP Andrew Smith claims to oppose waste incineration (Oxford Mail 5th May) despite the fact that Labour - both nationally and on the County - support this option.

Is this the same Andrew Smith who voted in support of incineration the only time the matter was put before Parliament in October 2003?

It is just this sort of two-faced opportunism that gives politicians a bad name.

Contrast this to the consistent and principled stand of the Green Party whom have backed alternatives to incineration on both City and County Councils. The Greens recently produced a detailed report setting out how burning our waste would provide only 1.5% of Oxfordshire's energy needs whilst recycling it would actually save 4 x more energy (See www.greenoxford.com).

Yours etc.

Cllr. Craig Simmons
