Green Leader tells Cameron how to bike it |

18th May 2006 Green Councillor Craig Simmons, Leader of the Oxford Green Group and an Oxfordshire County Councillor (Oxfordshire includes Cameron's Witney Constituency), today took the opportunity presented by the first Full City Council Meeting following the elections to demonstrate to Tory Leader David Cameron how papers, box files and a suit can be easily carried on a bicycle. Cameron's green gloss was left tarnished last week after it was revealed that he cycled to the Commons followed by his chaffeur-driven car. He claimed that the car was necessary as he could not fit his papers and suit into his bike panniers. Cllr Simmons, who does not own a car and usually cycles the 3 mile (5.2km) round trip from his home to the Town Hall and County Hall and to all other engagements, cycled his loaded bike and trailer to the Town Hall, St. Aldate's. Cllr Simmons intentionally carried more than he would normally require to prove the point that riding a bike is no barrier for a politician - at whatever level. Note that NO CAR will be following Councillor Simmons. Says Councillor Simmons: "If Cameron can afford a chaffeur I am sure he can afford a bike trailer. With it he can comfortably and securely carry in excess of 50 kilogrammes - more than enough for even the most challenging day in Parliament. If David wants some tips on cycling from a real Green then I am happy to lead him through the basics."
