Council backing for Climate March Print E-mail

3rd October 2006

At a full meeting of Oxford City Council yesterday, the Green Group secured Council backing for the 4th November March in London for action on climate change.

The motion from Green Councillor Matt Sellwood, seconded by Cllr Craig Simmons, received almost unanimous support.

Says Green Cllr Matt Sellwood; "When action by the Government is so wholly inadequate there is often little choice but to take to the streets. I am encouraged that Councillors of all parties recognise the need for more urgent action on climate change."

Says Cllr Craig Simmons; "There is a lot of talk about climate change - but sadly little significant action. Carbon dioxide emissions are rising - as is energy use. On the one hand politicians stress the need for urgent action - whilst merrily supporting expansion of roads and airports on the other. The aim of the March is to show the strength of public feeling for real change."
