21st November 2006
Cllr Nuala Young successfully tabled a motion on the question of the proposed replacement of Trident.
Cllr Young said, “It is clear from the number of Councillors who supported the motion that there is the need for an open debate in Parliament. At a time when our health service is in deep debt, it is a scandal that the Government are considering breaching the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and spending £25billion on a new nuclear weapons programme.”
Seconding the motion, Cllr Elise Benjamin highlighted the unmarked nuclear convoys that regularly travel round the edge of Oxford. She highlighted the convoy that went round Oxford and through Oxfordshire on November 13th and pointed out that there was a serious accident on the same stretch of road (near Didcot) the next day.
As a result of the motion, both Oxford MP’s will be asked to support two Early Day Motions requesting a full Parliamentary debate on Trident replacement, and the Chief Executive will be writing to the Prime Minister advising him of the Council’s opposition to any replacement of Trident.
