Today Oxford City Council will present its first ever award for green building, The David Steel Sustainable Building Award, to architect David Hammond, whose impressive eco-rennovation of his own home on Osney Island has reduced his energy use by two-thirds.
The award, named after a City Council officer with an active interest in environmental issues but who sadly died last November, was initiated by the City's Green Councillors as part of their successful 2006 budget.
says Green Councillor Craig Simmons, who attended the award ceremony: "The Hammonds have shown how it is possible, on a constrained site in a conservation area, to significantly reduce energy use and the associated carbon dioxide emissions from our existing housing stock. It is an impressive achievement and well-deserving of Oxford's first green building
award."
Next year the plan is to expand the award and create four different building categories to encourage innovation across small, large, commerical and residential properties.
