County refuse to back down on pavement parking policy Print E-mail

3rd April

All parties in on the County, LibDem, Lab and Tory today (at Full Council 3rd April) rallied against to Greens to throw out a motion from Green Councillor Craig Simmons which sought to reverse a recent County policy decision to allow pavement parking.

Text of motion defeated by 55 to 4 (all four Greens present voted for).

“This Council believes that creating new parking spaces by painting white lines on pavements goes against its stated aims to promote walking. It also legitimises pavement parking - which damages pavements and creates an obstruction.
This Council therefore agrees to discontinue this practice with immediate effect.”

Says Green Councillor Craig Simmons - "pavements are public space and should be protected. They are the last refuge of the pedestrian. Now even pavements are not safe from the ubiquitous car."
