Oxford – 14th July 2007
“Oxford Pride symbolises the tolerance and diversity of this city. It was a glorious mix of gay and straight, men and women, young and old and black and white,” said Peter Tatchell, gay human rights campaigner and Green Party candidate for Oxford East.
He was reflecting on the success of today’s Oxford Pride festival, of which he is a patron.
“We all came together, united in our commitment to defeat homophobic hatred and discrimination. We value Oxford as a safe, accepting place for people of all sexualities, races, faiths and beliefs. “It was a fabulous day, with glorious sunshine, lots of people and a great party atmosphere. We’ve had a wonderful celebration, and we also paused to remember the unfinished campaign for LGBT human rights.
Mr Tatchell was a keynote speaker at Oxford Pride. He addressed the festival-goers from the main stage:
“We’ve made great gains in recent years, but injustices still remain…..
“Civil partnerships are an important advance, but they are not equality. Separate is not equal. Equality means the right of gay couples to get married on exactly the same basis as heterosexual partners. The gay marriage ban must go. Marriage should be open to same-sex couples and civil partnerships should be open to heterosexuals......
“The government’s asylum policy violates international human rights law. It is refusing refuge to LGBT people who have fled jail, torture and attempted murder. They are being deported back to their home countries, where they will again be at risk of arrest and violent abuse…..
“Labour is failing to address the issue of homophobic bullying in schools. Two-thirds of lesbian and gay pupils have been bullied because of their sexuality, and half say their teachers take no action against anti-gay abuse. Homophobic bullying is as bad as racism and should be tackled with the same zero tolerance,” said Mr Tatchell.
