At a full meeting of Oxford City Council held on 19th November 2007, a motion from the Green Group succeeded in  securing widespread Council support for expanding the City's 20mph zones.

Text of motion below:

20’s Plenty

Proposed by Cllr Elise Benjamin

Seconded by Cllr Craig Simmons

This Council notes the active local ‘20’s Plenty’ road safety campaign being run jointly by Oxford Pedestrians Association and Cyclox which has gained widespread political support.

This Council regrets the slow progress by the County Council in implementing lower speed limits within Oxford resulting in some odd and confusing restrictions – for example, major roads being limited to 20mph with adjoining residential side streets where it is still legal to drive at 30mph.

This Council therefore wishes to restate its commitment to reducing speed limits within the City and asks the Leader to write to the County Council urging the Cabinet Member for Transport Implementation to invest in the expansion of 20mph zones within Oxford as part of the current budget round considerations.
