LibDems criticised over Oxford Union |

The Greens have criticised the LibDems, and in particular MP Evan Harris, for supporting the Oxford Union 'forum' involving BNP chairman Nick Griffin and holocaust denier David Irving. Speaking at a debate on the matter at a meeting of Oxford City Council on 19th November, Green Cllr Matt Sellwood convinvcly argued that providing a platform at the prestigious Oxford Union would add legitimacy and credibility to Griffin and Irving's views. Despite protests from the majority of Oxford City Councillors, the forum went ahead on 26th November. As predicted by those opposing the event, the massive media coverage that the Union attracted gave Griffin and Irving unprecedented publicity. Meanwhile the content of the debate, which the organisers and Harris argued would expose the despicable nature of the duo's views, went largely unreported. Writing in the Oxford Mail, Green Group Leader Cllr Craig Simmons also highlighted the inconsistency of Harris' views:
"LibDem MP Evan Harris should spend less of his time fighting for the human rights of rascists and holocaust deniers and more of his time supporting the rights of the rest of us.
Despite being a campaigner for equality and social justice who has committed no crimes and being elected to public office, I was not even allowed into the Oxford Union last night - let alone permitted to speak."
