Hydro-power hits Oxford Print E-mail

6th October 2008

A bid by Oxford's Green Councillors to move hydro power up the political agenda was successful when a motion propsed by Green Councillor Nuala YOung was passed by Full Council today.

The motion started by congratulating the low carbon West Oxford group for making the finals of the Big Green Challenge with their proposals to install, amongst other measures, a hydro-power plant on Osney Island.

The motion continued by proposing that hydro is investigated elsewhere in Oxford - at Iffley and Wolvercote - where the potential for this form of renewable energy has already been identified.

Says Green Councillor Nuala Young, who proposed the motion, "We live at the confluence of two fast flowing rivers. The Isis, in particular, offers massive potential for clean, green energy which could power hundreds of homes."
