Incinerator;- wrong technology - wrong place Print E-mail

Statement from Caroline Lucas MEP

December 2008

The proposed Oxfordshire incinerator is the wrong technology in the wrong place.  It is a crude, short-term method of dealing with growing waste disposal problems, using the excuse of energy generation to try and justify a technology that will not only cause hazardous pollution but also add to the existing noise and nuisance suffered by villagers from increased daily lorry movements.

If Oxfordshire County Council are really serious about reducing the need for landfill, they should seriously consider more appropriate and environmentally friendly technologies, such as Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT), instead of tying Oxfordshire into a 25 year contract with uncertain long-term environmental and financial costs.
