Following a request from Green Councillor Nuala Young, the Labour run City Council have refused to follow the example of Leeds City Council and seek additional powers to control the proliferation of 'To Let' signs - which are often left up well after a property is let and displayed long before a contract finishes.
Labour have instead decided to continue with the failed policy of 'voluntary compliance' for which there are insufficient resources to monitor and enforce.
Says Green Councillor Nuala Young; "The Leeds approach is tough but fair. It allows landlords to promote properties for let but stops the signs being used as year round advertising hoardings. At the moment the situation has got out of hand. I represent East Oxford where the problem is particularly acute."
