The Government's plans to introduce ID cards - at a massive cost of more than £5bn - suffered another setback as Oxford City Council passed a Green Group motion opposing the latest Government proposals.
Says proposer, Green Councillor Elise Benjamin; "Such cards are unnecessary, costly, and intrusive. It is claimed that they would deter terrorists - but there is absolutely no evidence that this is the case. None of the recent terrorist incidents could have been avoided by the presence of ID cards. The money would be better spent on community cohesion projects and better community policing."
